* * * *

Kieran leaned back against the truck, checking his cell for messages. Evan had sent him the usual jokes, comments, and one last text with an arrival date. He closed his eyes briefly. For all his sins, and the trouble Kieran invariably found himself in because of his friend, he missed Evan like he would miss a limb. Damned idiot had blown the last of his money on first class travel. If a boy has to come home, he needs to come home in style. Evan had a way of making things seem not so hard.

Jordan didn't follow him out of the house straight away, but Kieran wasn't concerned. He imagined Jordan had some things to say to Dad and so he waited. He tilted his head back and closed his eyes, his head bursting with ideas about what Jordan and he could do for the company—his designs, Jordan's skill at carpentry. Somehow they could pull this company together. From his dad's perspective, Jordan had done a damn fine job keeping the whole thing going during recession, and as the economy started to strengthen, it could only mean good things for them all. Kieran had yet to see the whole proof of that, but he didn't doubt his dad for one minute.

"Where are we going?" Kieran was startled as Jordan came to a halt next to him, opening his eyes and blinking at the light.

"Dad was telling me about the Johnson house that came on the market for renovation."

"It's too big for us." Jordan replied quickly, but Kieran just held up a hand to stop him.

"Dad said that, but I did some research—"

"Kieran, this isn't going to go well if you discount everything your dad or I say. We already looked. We know this restoration from the ground up, with all its problems. Shit, Kieran, the amount of money we would need to take this on is way out of our reach." Kieran winced at the immediate anger and defense in Jordan's urgent response.

"I'm not discounting anything from you or Dad, I'm not. Please just listen to me." There was a pause, Jordan seeming to weigh up what Kieran was saying and then he shrugged to indicate Kieran should continue. "Can we drive up there, talk on site?" Jordan said nothing in return, just climbed into truck, indicating Kieran should join him. He supposed that was one step in the right direction—at least they were in the truck.

"Put your seat belt on," Jordan said firmly as soon as Kieran clambered up in the cab.

"Dude, I am twenty-six, not six," Kieran muttered, slumping back in the seat, reverting to the childhood hate of being ordered around by a big brother as quick as you could say childish.

"Put the belt on," Jordan insisted.

"It's only like two miles to the Johnson place." Kieran realized he was very close to sounding like he was whining, which undermined being a grown up and convincing Jordan that the Johnson place was a good project for AC.
